According to an AP squib in the ProJo newsblog, embattled Rep. Dan Gordon (R-71) has begun writing an autobiography and has finished "about a dozen 'rough' pages that chronicle his childhood, education and entry into military service."
I'll refrain from piling on, but have to note that this reminds me of deadpan comedian Steven Wright's classic bit: "I'm writing a book. I've got the page numbers done."
In a story posted on the ProJo this afternoon, a US Marine Corps spokesperson released a list of the ranks and duty stations of embattled Rep Dan Gordon (R-71). You'll want to go read it in detail, but the news is not good. According to the ProJo, Gordon had two demotions during his service, and no deployment listed that would have put him eight miles outside Baghdad.
When reached for comment, according to the ProJo, Gordon responded with an expletive.
At yesterday's anti-Chafee rally, the 9 supporters of Rep. Dan Gordon (R-71) had to share the Capital steps with a photo shoot for a wedding party wearing "Phantom of the Opera" masks.
Rep. Gordon's half-hour rant focused on attacking Gov. Chafee for his "intolerable act" of subverting the legislature on tuition for undocumented immigrant kids. "He's committed felony after felony," yelled one attendee. I believe he was talking about the Governor.
At one point, Gordon veered off-topic to rail about government waste, waving his General Assembly ID badge (see video) as evidence.
Said Gordon: "We don't have, as state representatives and senators, to the best of my knowledge, any use for this whatsoever."
While I may agree with the representative in this specific case, I would like to point out that such badges allow public officials access to otherwise restricted areas, such as crossing police lines at a flood area to assess the situation and make sure your constituents are okay.
Like, say, your constituents in Portsmouth Park during Irene?
One of the attendees offered a suggestion. "You should have showed that to the cops."
In the Facebook group "We The People of RI" a user identified as embattled Rep. Dan Gordon (R-71) has announced that the promised State House "bi-partisan protest against His Majesty, Governor Chafee's, defacto implementation of legalized thievery" will be this Saturday, October 1, from 3-5pm.
Gordon also seems to have used this Facebook group to defend himself (see the screen cap, above). I think I'll pass on the invitation to view his scars.
For the record, Dan, I will admit that I can only name one bill you sponsored: to eliminate the school bus monitors that have unquestionably saved the lives of Rhode Island children.
The Boston Globe is reporting that embattled Portsmouth Rep. Dan Gordon (R-71) has again called for Linc Chafee's resignation, and now plans a rally and petition drive to oust the governor.
According to the Globe story, Gordon told the Associated Press that Chafee's support for in-state tuition for undocumented immigrants constituted an ethics violation.
"I took an oath to uphold the Constitution and I take that oath quite seriously," Gordon is quoted as saying.
A story in the Fall River Herald quotes PCC President Larry Fitzmorris who has not yet decided whether to call for the resignation of embattled Rep. Dan Gordon (R-71).
“He has some very serious problems, but it’s so murky,” Fitzmorris said.
Murky? Wow. That's not the word I would have chosen. The article cites Portsmouth Republican Town Committee Chair, Jeff Plumb, unequivocally calling for Gordon to step aside. “Regardless of whether they’re Republican or Democrat, it’s ‘he should resign,’" Plumb is quoted as saying.
I'm glad that the PCC shows such devotion to the candidates they endorse. Hopefully the voters of Portsmouth will remember this next year.
According to an AP wire story that just moved, "Military service records for a Rhode Island lawmaker who has blamed a string of legal troubles on combat stress he suffered in the 1991 Gulf War indicate he never served in the Middle East." Go read the story.
A post on the ProJo news blog cites a statement by Gov. Chafee: "While I commend Rep. Gordon for acknowledging his personal challenges, I concur with Speaker Fox and Minority Leader Newberry that he is no longer able to effectively serve his constituents. Accordingly, it is my view that Rep. Gordon should resign immediately from the Rhode Island House of Representatives."
Dan Gordon denies knowledge of district committees at press conference this morning.
Although Dan Gordon doesn't know it, in Rhode Island, candidates for the House of Representatives are normally endorsed by the party committee for the district. It's this endorsement that allows you to run with the party affiliation next to your name. When there is no such group, other folks pinch hit, according to Portsmouth Registrar of Voters Madeleine Pencak. In Gordon's case, that appears to have been the Portsmouth Republican Town Committee, based on a filing obtained from the Portsmouth Canvassing Authority.
Portsmouth Republican Committee endorsements for Dan Gordon
So who endorsed Gordon? Former Town Chair Frank Oliveira, PCC Vice-President Joe Lorenz, and Sen. Chris Ottiano. (There are two other names listed, but they're not legible — maybe eagle-eyed readers can help out: view the whole document here.)
Also got a copy of his declaration of candidacy for those completists who want the full set of Gordonabilia.
Full disclosure: I am a member of the Portsmouth Democratic Town Committee. My opinions are entirely my own.
