WTF happened in Portsmouth

Nov 4, 2008
Portsmouth Dems glumly tabulate Tuesday results.

It's taken me a while to recover, so apologies for the lapse over the last few days. First, thank you to every Portsmouth resident who voted in Tuesday's historic election. I know there were many people who supported Republicans locally but cast votes for Obama, and for that, and the message of change for the country at large, we can all be thankful.

Turning to the local race for Town Council. It's taken me a few days to work through the shock and try to come to an understanding. My sense is that several factors contributed to the surprising result: An effective wedge issue campaign, the politics of personality, and failure by the Democrats to organize and get their message out.

In the last few weeks of the race, the question of sewers emerged as a defining issue. The Republican and Independent position was a flat "no," while the Democrats kept coming back to the wastewater study and letting the voters decide. Unlike what we saw in the national election, flinging...uh... mud seems to have worked. The Dems were painted as supporters of sewers and overdevelopment and their measured responses were ineffective at dislodging this label. You can carve this on the headstone of many a failed Democrat: Nuanced positions end up at the bottom of the bay while simple slogans skate by overhead on thin ice.

Second, personalities matter, apparently as much or more than party affiliation or message, for Portsmouth voters and we forget this at our peril. One of the things I've been staring at for the past few days are the results by precinct, and the conclusion is inescapable: Folks voted for people they knew. Canario won Prudence Island. Karen Gleason won Common Fence Point. Huck Little, who's been around forever and everybody knows, won in a lot of places. You can right-click to download a color-coded Excel file here; vote totals in each precinct are tinted in descending ROYGBIV order. I just cannot wrap my head around the idea that anyone who had actually seen Karen Gleason on the Council for the last two years would have voted for her. But there you are.

And finally, no Democratic loss would be complete without the requisite dollop of bitter recrimination. While our opponents — and I say "our" on purpose; I have never hidden the fact that I am a hard-core Dem — were out canvassing with their simple messages about sewers and spending, our team failed to mount an aggressive response. The Democrats stressed all the things they had accomplished over the last few years: the wind turbine, open space, blocking big boxes, keeping the Town running in a tightening fiscal regime. They ran on their record. Oops.

The next two years will be interesting. Now that the conservatives are in control of the Council, let us see what they actually accomplish. It will be increasingly important to keep an eye on what's happening at Town Hall, so I won't be going anywhere. In fact, I've already asked a couple of folks — who now have some extra time on their hands — to help out with blogging so that we can cover even more meetings, and we'll be announcing that shortly.

The campaign is over and it's back to work. A big thank you to everyone who ran, and congratulations and best wishes (at least until I disagree with them) to all the winners. For the rest of us, time to pick up and move on, and it is worthwhile to remember the Buddha's last words: "Transient are conditioned things. Try to accomplish your aim with diligence."

"WTF happened in Portsmouth"
The only thing that happened was the people of Portsmouth have spoken, and I couldn't be happier with the results, except for Seveney getting in by the skin of his teeth.
It is obvious by your blog that you had your heart set on (people you know) such as friends Katzman and Katzman to get in, and your constant bashing of Karen, complete with pictures, to be gone. Sorry but the people of Portsmouth do not feel the same way as you do. I honestly feel that if Mr. Katzman had not affiliated and connected himself so strongly, with this blog and your(bias) opinions that he would have had a chance of being re-elected. You blogging your own opinions on here is one thing(we can take it with a grain of salt, and consider the source) but Mr. Katzman writing in his own words here and showing his true colors is another thing all together. Mr. Katzman is a very smart man who made a very stupid mistake.
Your blog, and your opinions, show its own record on just how out of touch you are with what the people of Portsmouth are really thinking, and feeling. Maybe you should give more credit to the fact that we are thinking with our own minds, seeing through our own eyes, feeling with our own hearts, without any influence from a bias blogger who bashes certain people simply because HE doesn't like them, and discounts what thier record of many years of dedication , and hard work shows.
This is one time that you can't blame it all on a tent meeting, or the PCC, no wonder you are so confused and "just cannot wrap my head around the idea".

Mystie

Hi, Stormie...
Your inability to detect those occasions when "bias" should have the "ed" ending as an adjective is like a thumbprint.

I'm going to say the same thing I say every time you come here: Let's just cut to the chase where you get pissed off and leave in a huff and skip the annoying back and forth in the middle.

No sour grapes here. I do not criticize people because I don't like them; I raise objections to their performance as public servants or actors in the public sphere. I'm actually quite looking forward to seeing what this Council can accomplish. If Tailgunner spends the next two years having the same kind of success she had the other night — where she couldn't even get a second on her motions — I will expect you to come back here and admit what you see through your own eyes.

Or could it be that you might be the bias(ed) one?

Best,

correcting the spelling, and being critical, as a distraction. So you are a better speller than I, that has already been established, big whoop. You are a writer, I am not, but I am a thinker. I didn't know I would get more points or a gold star for correct spelling or I would have used spell check first.
Speaking of the other night, and seeing through my own eyes, Notice who voted for Driscol to get the 3% raise? Two who have been booted out and another who stayed in by the skin of his teeth, I suspect that if they had waited just a little bit longer he (Driscol) wouldn't have been so lucky with the new councel coming in. And Yes I heard with my own ears why Karen opposed this 3% raise and so did you, and everyone else. Didn't make sense to you, Katzman, West, or Seveney??? Just think of how much we could have saved by a no vote and how much more we could afford to put into our schools.
I am confident that with the new councel we will focus much more on Priorities!
Before you say that Driscol deserves more for a job well done, please save your breath, he does do his job, does he do it well? that is always debatable, does he get enough of a hefty pay check for it already? YES(it was just listed in the paper for all to see). Karen also added that it was nothing personal and would get the same reaction had it been anyone else in this position.
Karen will be getting many seconds on her motions once the new councel takes place, and the old baggage is gone. I have no doubts about that.
"Let's just cut to the chase where you get pissed off and leave in a huff"
I have no idea what you are talking about, I am not pissed off nor am I in a huff. If I seem to disappear for long periods of time it is purely because i have a very busy life and most of the time barely enough time to read up, never mind reply, But Thank you for your most sincere, and genuine, Welcome back anyway LOL.

Have a good day. :)

Mystie
p.s. not leaving pissed off or in a huff.

Hi, Stormie...
The spelling was just used to point out to (possibly new) readers that you were the one who ran fake names as sock puppets, something you were warned about the last time you were here.

And here's what you said back in January: "I meant what I said... I will no longer take part in this blog."

Are we meant to take you at your word, or not?

Cheers.

ps: Neither Huck Little nor Pete McIntyre offered a second for Gleason's motion either. Unless you think they should be swept out too?

You assume(what a genius) that because you did your check up on me and because the same computer is being used that we are one in the same person?, You are wrong, there are 3 different people using this same pc, is that a crime?
As far as no longer taking part in this blog, you are wishful thinking because you do not like to hear what I have to say, I tell it like it is, I'm honest and fair, something you should practice more of. But I am not here to argue with you, I spoke my mind, said my piece and it is that simple, so go ahead and put your usual spin on it and make this into something bigger than it needs to be, sheesh I hate the drama.

No come back on the 3% raise? I find that interesting.
"ps: Neither Huck Little nor Pete McIntyre offered a second for Gleason's motion either. Unless you think they should be swept out too?"
Again you make no sense. I stated above that I was very happy with the outcome except for Seveney.

I would need 3 days off work in order to have the time to reply to your constant back and forth at me when all I have done is simply voiced my opinion, kept brief, and yet to the point may I add. I doubt seriously that any of the readers are interested in your drama, your correction on word spellings, or the fact that three people from the same household are using the same pc.
Stick to what you do best at the meetings, picking and choosing the notes(to your liking) to put here on your little blog.
You may accuse me of using fake names, and think whatever you wish of me as a person, but I have never had dead fish put on my doorstep, eggs thrown, or prank calls in all of the 38 plus years I have lived in Portsmouth. Enough said.

Mystie

Hi, Mystie...
You think it "enough said" that people harass me and my family?

I will let the rest of Portsmouth be the judge of your character.

Cheers.
-j

The only thing unclear here is you. "Enough said" meaning that I have said enough on the matter and made my point very clear.
I never condoned harassment to you or your family, I do not and never will condone harassment in any way , shape, or form.
Save your self the embarrasment of your statement "I will let the rest of Portsmouth be the judge of your character."
The rest of Portsmouth who know me, for who, and what I stand for will only be laughing at that rediculous statement. It is so far from the truth.
I was merely making a comparison of the fact that you have been harrased and that I have never been, You see Mr. McDaid, in 38 years of living and working in my town of Portsmouth, never have made any enemies, I am very well liked by just about everyone who has met me, and loved by those who know me.
But again, make no mistake about it, I do NOT condone harrasment to you, your family, or anyone else. It is just plain WRONG, and should not happen, ever!
You and I may not agree on many subjects but I wish you and your family peace.

Mystie

Mystie...
When you point to people leaving a dead fish on my porch and say "enough said," that is condoning harassment. Now you're trying to spin your way out of it by saying that I "made" enemies. So it's all my fault.

Yeah, that's a lot better.

Cheers.

John...Everytime you put a spin on my words to your advantage you make a fool out of yourself for the reasons I have already stated in my last reply, To even suggest this about me is laughable to ALL who know me, and many people do know me. I don't have to defend myself againts such nonsense, accusations, and blantant lies from someone who doesn't know me from a hole in the wall. News Flash, Your tacky tactics to avoid and distract from answering my questions, which you are now using only to skirt around the issues( no surprise there) I have pointed out, is not fooling anyone. Just as your tacky tactics against Karen Gleason didn't, perfect example. All the time and effort you spent bashing her at every chance you got, posting pictures of her talking to Mr. Fitzmorris....etc...etc...didn't work either obviously, you failed miserably at that, as you are trying to do here with me...putting words in my mouth, make false accusations, using and changing words to your advantage, and critizing someone you don't know personally from a hole in the wall and never will know, because nobody likes a trouble maker. You (sadly) under estimated the power of true, long time dedication, hard work, loyality, honesty, and insulted the intelligence of the people of Portsmouth. Karen served 4 years on the school comittee, 2 years on the town counsel, and re-elected to serve another 2 years, pretty darn good for someone you project to be so stupid, hey?
I don't care if you think I wasn't sincere in my last reply, because you see I have something better than just your silly, and paranoid opinions, I have many many people in this town who know me( for many many years) for who I really am, and who know( the truth) that I am sincere, and genuine,
just as Karen does, We have nothing to prove to you.
John :"Now you're trying to spin your way out of it by saying that I "made" enemies. So it's all my fault."
What would you call those who would do such aweful things to anyone? Friends?

Hi, Mystie...
You are the one who came here to attack me.

And you are still here, arguing that my criticism of public officials "made" people my enemies.

Yet you also say that my comments are dismissed as laughable and foolish. Surely you must admit that both of these cannot be true.

I do not have — words do not have — that kind of power over other people's minds. If people make the choice to hate, I can feel compassion for them, but recognize that it is something beyond my control.

Cheers.

Mystie -

1. Your unwavering support for Karen Gleason is absolutely mystifying (pun intended). Please direct me to just ONE positive thing on Karen's record that qualifies her to sit on the Council and make decisions for this town? Truthfully, I cannot think of one. Rather than taking a stand and making a decision based on the information available, she just kicks the can down the road with the overly tired excuse of "I need more information before I can support this." At least she could have a backbone and state the real reasons why she votes “no” on just about everything. She’s a hack and so are the people who voted for her.

2. Just an FYI - Use spell check before you post. I know it's hard to believe, but when making an argument, you lose all credibility when you continue to make countless grammatical / spelling errors. That’s just a fact of life.

Hi, Rhody5...
I think you pose an excellent question. The only one I can think of is Gleason's support for a hard cap on store sizes in town. But I have to immediately qualify that, because of her attempts to set the cap smaller than Clements (which would have made our popular local retailer instantly non-conforming) and her baffling motion for a moratorium on all commercial development (which would have devastated our non-residential tax base). Those are the kinds of positions that make me question her judgment.

However, I can understand how people who aren't politics junkies, who just read about her final vote basic position, would miss those subtleties. So I can imagine well-intentioned people voting for her. But then, I have a pretty good imagination.

Cheers.
