Candidates 2008 (updated, with poke at ProJo)

The ProJo has got the firstest list of Portsmouth candidates who filed their papers as of earlier this afternoon. I'll update this page as more folks get entered, since as of now there's no listing for the Council or School Committee.

But there is one interesting tidbit: Former Council President Mary Ann Edwards has filed papers to run for Town Clerk, according to the ProJo list.

Update: Of course, the ProJo was wrong, according to the official list on the RI Secretary of State Web site. They only have Kathy Viera-Beaudoin (R) running for Town Clerk. Oopsie.

According to the official list, here's how the November election shapes up:

Democrats running for School Committee (for 3 slots on ballot)
TERRI-DENISE CORTVRIEND
MARILYN A KING
THOMAS RICHARD VADNEY
ANGELA VOLPICELLI
SYLVIA J WEDGE

Democrats for Town Council (for 7 slots)
DENNIS M CANARIO
MARY L CORREIA
DAVID D CROSTON
ALBERT E HONNEN JR
LEONARD BARRY KATZMAN
MARK J KATZMAN
JAMES ARTHUR SEVENEY
WILLIAM E WEST

Independents for Town Council:
PHILIP T DRISCOLL
KAREN J GLEASON
EUGENE J LOVE
JUDITH J STAVEN

Republicans for Town Council:
KEITH E HAMILTON
HUBERT LITTLE
PETER J MCINTYRE
JEFFREY C PLUMB
JOSEPH W ROBICHEAU

Of course, this list may not be final, given the time lag updating the site as all the papers came in at 4pm yesterday. But a couple of observations. Our local Dems have clearly fielded a strong slate of candidates for both the Council and the School Committee — such a strong field that it appears there will need to be a Democratic primary, unless I have my math wrong.

The "Independents" are a familiar gang of well-known names. About Tailgunner Gleason, well, you know my views. And Gene "13th in a field of 15" Love, whose most visible accomplishment, well publicized during meetings by Tailgunner, was fixing the microphones in the Council chamber? Is he going to run on that?

The real shocker is the Republican list for Council. It seems a bit...uh (sounds of counting on fingers) ...short. Pete McIntyre told me personally, on at least two occasions, that he was not running. And Joe Robicheau? The editor of the PCC newsletter? Are they kidding?

Comments

I went on the Sec of State website earlier this morning and the list was much longer, including three husband-wife teams. Were those errors? A few them were well-known PCC couples, so at first I figured it was an attempt to flood the field. Perhaps it was just some input errors in an attempt to get the info all logged in at the Sec. of State's office last night.

I'm glad to see Al Honnen's name back on the ballot, as well as many of the 'good guys' running for re-election. I certainly know that I wouldn't be up for the abuse and the "theatre of the absurd" atmosphere that they put up with.

Hi, English...
Just checked again, and while I didn't keep a copy of the earlier full list, it seems to be about the same names. There are about 70 people there, but the majority are the two Town Committees (Democrat and Republican) who also have to file their papers in this same process.

Cheers.

This is the list I saw earlier today. But notice that both Raylene and Glenn Allen are listed as running for Town Committee, as well as M/M Robicheau. And there are a slew of Levesque's (well, three - is that a slew?). It also indicates that Ottiano is running for both state and local offices. Maybe I'm just not reading it right?

I was reading this as just two different names for Town Council - both council and committee. I was confused b/c it doesn't say Democratic Town Committee and Republican Town Committee. Now it makes much more sense.
