Portsmouth Democrats endorse ballot questions

As reported in today's Providence Journal, the Portsmouth Democratic Town Committee has endorsed all three of the initiatives on the ballot this November 6: Wind energy, open space, and Charter change to replace the Tent Meeting with all-day voting in a booth.

“The charter change will get rid of the divisive and exclusive tent meeting once and for all,” said Town Committee Chairwoman Mary Ann Edwards.

She alluded to the contentious special Financial Town Meeting held in August 2006, in which... [1,280 - ed] voters, about 10 percent of the town’s electors, cut about $1.7 million from the combined school and municipal budgets.

“Under the new process, voters will be able to study the exact budget question prior to the election, absentee ballots will be available for the disabled, the elderly, armed service members, students and others, and polls will be open throughout the day and evening,” Edwards said. “It is simply much more democratic.”

Yay, Dems. Thanks for the endorsement. Now, let's all get to the polls. Say it with me: Out of the Tent and into a BOOTH.
