Occupy Providence votes to allow sprinkler cleaning, replace banners

Discussion at the Occupy Providence GA.

At this afternoon's General Assembly (GA), Occupy Providence voted to honor a request by the city to temporarily relocate tents to clean the underground sprinkler system in Burnside Park. While the overall tone was one of cooperation with the city, the motion was framed to include a request that the proposed cleaning be carried out by Parks & Recreation personnel with only the level of police presence absolutely required. In response to questions from the group, no evacuation of the park is anticipated, only the need to temporarily move some of the tents which may be located over sprinkler heads.

In other action, the GA voted to replace the "Occupy Providence" banner which went missing from the statue of Gen. Burnside last week. The group approved a motion to produce several identical banners which could be secured to spots along the fence to make them more visible from the surrounding streets.

There was also discussion of a planned visit to Providence City Hall on Thursday, Nov. 17, where the supporters were encouraged to attend the City Council meeting, where a proposal in support of Occupy Providence is expected to be on the agenda.
