Celebrate Portsmouth teachers at PPEF Showcase Thursday

On Thursday, Oct 21, the Portsmouth Public Education Foundation (PPEF) holds its annual Fall Showcase, spotlighting grant-winning educational innovations by Portsmouth teachers last year. The teachers will be on hand to talk about their projects and show the work they did with their students.

You'll have the opportunity to hear about work by these 2009 grant recipients: Elaine Amaral, Jodi Agustine, Shannon Booth, Amanda Boswell, Donna Combra, Majorie Cogar, Susan Curley, Colleen Dopart, Joan Eldredge-Mouradillan, Francesca Faria, Vicky Flaherty, Sue Frost, Jayne Gardner, Diana Grinnel, Kimberly Hancock, Sarah Hunicke, Keri Jardine, Janet Kasparian, Liz King and Grade 2 Team, Kate Mahoney, Caroline Marino, Michelle Michno, Rose Muller, Sharon Raposo, Ted Rausch, Valerie Seveney, Nancy Souza, Mary Stockard, Megan Sullivan, Monica Taft, Tanin Tickner, and 2009 Teacher of the Year Cheryl DelSanto.

The event will also feature the presentation of this year's Teacher of the Year award to PHS math teacher Kim Cunningham, sponsored by NewportFed.

This evening is a fundraiser for the PPEF, so you'll also enjoy delicious appetizers and a cash bar while checking out the fabulous items at the silent auction. The event runs from 6-8pm at the Green Valley Country Club on Union Street, and tickets are $20 per person/$35 couple at the door — but if you get them in advance, they're just $15 per person, $25/couple.

For tickets, contact Marilyn Brockway mlbrockway[at]cox[dot]net, 862-4447 or Maria Hurley@ shellseeker77[at]hotmail[dot]com 683-9612.

The Portsmouth Public Education Foundation is a 501(c)3 nonprofit which has awarded almost $70,0000 in grants to Portsmouth teachers for innovative classroom projects over the past eight years. Visit the PPEF web site to learn more.

Full disclosure: I am a member of the board of directors of PPEF, and I'd like to personally invite you to come on by on Thursday. You'll have a chance to see some of the amazing work our teachers and students are doing, and your contribution helps the organization support this work. Hope to see you there!

It's interesting to me that you did not even question why the Teacher of the Year award was incorrectly posted for 2009 instead of finding out who the 2010 recipient was. The correct info was posted only once, to my knowledge, in August when the PPEF made their announcement. Since then the PHS list serve and apparently other PSD list serves posted the wrong flyer with the wrong name and year of the Teacher of the Year award-- are you saying that you just copy and paste info that is fed to you from PSD? Is this how you will conduct yourself as a school committee member? The school committee has enough lambs on it. We need independent thinkers who ask detailed questions and investigate answers independently.

Hi, justamom...
I have not edited the post above, and if you read it again, I hope you'll notice the following line:

"The event will also feature the presentation of this year's Teacher of the Year award to PHS math teacher Kim Cunningham, sponsored by NewportFed."

I assure you that I did not just copy and paste -- if you compare my list of 2009 award-winning teachers to the listserv versions, you'll notice that mine is alphabetized.

And just to be clear: if the school district listservs ran the wrong info, it was because there was an error in the information provided by PPEF. I posted the information here in September, when it was publicly announced: http://www.torvex.com/jmcdaid/node/1473

I appreciate your feedback, but your evidence does not support your assertions.

Best Regards.

Read the post but you have the 2009 award winner listed first in the preceding paragraph---She no longer even works in the PSD-- so why was her name there? She was honored last year--- And if your curious, as I am, why doesn't she work for PSD anymore just 1 year after receiving Teacher of the Year? The PPEF released a correct listing at one time, but it was not released by PHS. If you are on the board, I'll ask you, why? And why would they release incorrect info? Did they or was their flyer changed? justamom

Hi, justamom...
Ms. DelSanto was the recipient of an award in 2009; her name was on the flier on a listing of all the 2009 honorees -- I'm not sure where you're going with this.

If you have questions about what PHS did or did not do, I would suggest you ask Principal Littlefield directly, not post anonymous innuendo. Thanks.

Best,
