This weekend and next, Portsmouth Community Theater (PCT) will be presenting the wonderful Jones and Schmidt musical The Fantasticks at the Aquidneck Island Christian Academy, 8pm Thurs-Sat, with 2pm Sunday matinees.

If you've ever seen the show, you can stop reading now and just call 'em up for tickets.

Not familiar? The Fantasticks is the world's longest-running musical (I saw it twice at the Sullivan Street playhouse in NY during its 42-year run) and it is a minimalist masterpiece: just a few actors, a handful of props, and the simplest and oldest of stories (boy meets girl). But what has given the show its endurance is the charming, clever gem of a libretto and some truly memorable music (you'll have heard "Try to Remember," even if you didn't know it came from this show.) First-time viewers are in for a rare treat; an oasis of genuine musical theater in these days of bloated, Disneyfied productions.

PCT says that seating is limited, so you'll want to call 401-683-1460 for reservations. Tickets are $15 for adults and $12 for children, seniors, students, and military. More info on the Portsmouth Community Theater Web site. Presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International.
