Starting tomorrow, Newport Hospital will have a new CEO as August Cordeiro takes over for departing president Arthur Sampson, Lifespan announced recently. During Sampson's 15-year tenure, the hospital saw major additions and renovations, and Portsmouth residents will remember the opening of their new imaging center on Turnpike Ave last year. Sampson will be taking on a new role as executive director at another Lifespan facility, the Miriam Hospital in Providence.

For "Gus" Cordeiro, tomorrow marks a return. He held multiple positions at Newport during a 20-year career, the last being vice president before leaving in 2001 to take on a role at Rhode Island Hospital (RIH). Cordeiro said in a statement, "I look forward to working with the excellent physicians, renewing acquaintances and meeting new members of the team, and continuing the plans and achievements the hospital has made under Arthur Sampson’s leadership."

It's not just professional, either, according to hospital spokesperson Peggy O'Keefe, who noted that Middletown resident Cordeiro was born in Newport Hospital, and lived here on the Island even when he was working at RIH. O'Keefe said Cordeiro is very excited to be returning to a place that has been such a big part of his life.

Thanks and congratulations to Arthur Sampson for the fine work he has done, and best wishes to Cordeiro as he takes over and continues to build on the success of the hospital.

And while we're talking about transitions, Mary B. Kozik last month took on the role of Chief Development Officer, according to a letter sent to donors. She replaces long-time development officer Mary Alice Williams, who retired in May.

Annual giving season is coming up (for those of us who are, somehow, still employed), and I'd like to remind everyone that Newport, as a community hospital, can really use your support. If your company matches donations at this time of year, please do reach out to Ms. Kozik if you have any questions or need any information.
