Time to act: RI legislators approve anti-abortion license plate.

Yesterday, in the middle of vacation week, when everyone has stopped paying attention because the budget is done, bills to create "Choose Life" license plates sailed through both houses of the Rhode Island General Assembly. The original language specifically named the Knights of Columbus as a beneficiary of the registration fee, which a hasty rewrite turned into CareNet RI, but the net effect is the same: state dollars going to support "alternative choices of infant adoption"

You can get the "official" story on the ProJo site; the Humanists of Rhode Island have a good press release. You can read about what to do on RI Future. The majority in the Senate presents a tough nut, but the House vote is soft enough that overriding a veto would be problematic.

If you don't want to click through, just pick up the phone and call Gov. Linc Chafee at (401) 222-2080 or e-mail at governor@governor.ri.gov. I made a call and it took all of 30 seconds. It's a patriotic thing you can do to celebrate America's freedoms.

Full disclosure: I'm a dues-paying member of the RI ACLU and the Humanists of Rhode Island, and a supporter of Planned Parenthood.
