Dorothy (Kirkwood) Milley McDaid

Dorothy "Dot" McDaid, 83, of Portsmouth, formerly of Aquidneck Place, died Saturday, September 4, at the Grand Islander Health Care Center after a long illness.

She was the wife of the late Jack Milley and the late John McDaid.

Born in Fall River, MA, on September 7, 1920, she was the daughter of the late Stephen P. and Elizabeth (Flood) Kirkwood.

Dot grew up in Portsmouth. She graduated from Rogers High School and the Newport Hospital School of Nursing, and went on to a career in New York’s Kings County Hospital, where she spent more than 30 years caring for premature infants.

She met her first husband, Jack, in Newport, and she moved to New York City when he returned to a Naval hospital there following WWII. After his death, she remained in New York and earned her B.S.N. at St. John’s University. In 1953, she met and married her second husband, John, who passed away in 1979.

After retiring, she moved back home to Portsmouth, where she was a communicant at St. Anthony’s Church.

She is survived by her son John McDaid of Portsmouth, his wife Karen, and her beloved grandson Jack, her sister-in-law Juliette Kirkwood Whitehead of New Bedford, her brother-in-law Michael McDaid of Middletown, and several nieces and nephews.

She was the sister of the late Arthur Kirkwood, Stephen B. “Buddy” Kirkwood, and Rita (Kirkwood) Hoyt, and grandmother of the late Maxwell McDaid.

Viewing will be Wednesday, September 8, from 4-8 pm, at the Connors Funeral Home, 55 West Main Road, Portsmouth, with a Mass of Christian burial on Thursday, 10 am in St. Anthony’s Church, 2836 East Main Road, Portsmouth.

Burial will be in St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Fall River.
